THE SEA IS WITHIN ME, 2025
A collaboration by artist Lita Albuquerque and dancer and choreographer Jasmine Albuquerque
in dialogue with extreme vocalist Carmina Escobar and double bassist Laura Dykes
Untitled Art, the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, Houston, Texas
The performance, The Sea is Within Me, premiered as part of Untitled Art Houston 2025, and was staged at the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern. There were a total of 5 performances with the audience limited to 40 people per show.
The Sea is Within Me is a dramatic interpretation of one moment in time in Lita Albuquerque’s on going narrative of the character, Najma, a Twenty Fifth Century Female Astronaut (played by Jasmine Albuquerque) who comes to Planet Earth at different times in our history to remind us of our cosmic origins and to seed interstellar consciousness. To be able to transmit this light, she must endure several trials in order to pass this spiritual initiation. In The Sea is Within Me, she finds herself in the middle the sea with no land in sight; night is coming, and a storm is approaching. We see her here as she battles raw nature and her own psyche to come out triumphant. Through Jasmine Albuquerque’s emotive dance, Carmina Escobar heart wrenching and powerful voice and Laura Dykes hypnotic double bass, we encounter Najma in a sacred tribulation.
