SOL STAR, 1996

Pigment

Sixth International Cairo Biennale, Giza Plateau, Egypt

Albuquerque represented the United States for the Sixth International Cairo Biennale in 1996 and received the Biennale Prize with her Sol Star project. An ephemeral art installation south of the Great Pyramids of Giza, Sol Star consisted of three tons of powdered blue pigment arranged in a specific pattern of ninety nine blue circles across the desert surface. Each pigment circle was of a different diameter to reflect the varying brightness of the stars directly above. Sol Star created a star map “reflection” on the sands of this ancient site.
