Created under the auspice of the U.S. General Services Administration, this project is comprised of the Summer and Winter Gardens. The Summer Garden is the main approach to the courthouse and its elements exist solely on the ground. Visitors to the courthouse walk over concentric rings of alternating red and black stone inlaid with stars. The Winter Garden is comprised of nine intimately scaled fountains set on a regular grid. Their silk-screened glass caps each consist of layered glass of images and text from Tucson’s early century photographer’s archive and diaries. Each one of the fountains has a historical theme from the prehistoric nature of Tucson to the Native American, Spanish and English History to the interstellar, alluding to the work done in Astronomy at Tucson’s Kit’s Peak Observatory.
