BENEATH THE BLACK POLISHED GRANITE LIES A SERIES OF ISLANDS EACH ONE FLOATING ON A COPPER PLATE, 1983
Copper
Los Angeles City Hall
Pounded thin sheets of reflective copper were placed in the existing granite wall to echo what can be seen through the window of the lobby – the stepped pyramid shape of the Los Angeles City Hall, and is reflected in the highly polished granite of the floor. Through a very small gesture (copper leaf pounded on the wall) Albuquerque has created a dimensional piece that has the illusion of large blocks of copper on the wall and a reflection that goes deep down into the earth.
