Golden State is the largest public art project commissioned by the state in California’s history. This walking exhibition through the history of gold, science and astrophysics, is visually combined with the history of California in a two-block-long permanent installation. Fifty-five sculptures are placed in alignment to the stars as they were when California became a state. Visitors walking through the field of images arrive at the threshold of a specially painted concrete walkway descending into the landscape and ending on a golden sphere, an exact replica of what is atop the State Capitol. Viewed from a precise position at its entrance, the surface of this excavated space reveals the anamorph image of astronomer Edwin Hubble looking through a telescope.
